TREATMENT AND CONTROL OF DIABETES THROUGH UNANI SYSTEM OF MEDICINE by Dr. Ansari Mushir Akhtar Mohd.

Introduction:

Diabetes is a worldwide health problem and a leading cause of death in many countries. In Unani system of medicine (USM), the term Ziabetus is used for diabetes in general and Ziabetus Shakri for the diabetes mellitus. Unani physician explained diabetes as a disease of the kidney.^[1-5]

Line of treatment/Treatment modules ^{[1-6 ]}

• Treat the causes
• Diet: Green vegetables, dry fruits, curd, etc.
• Drink; aabe anar (pomegranate water), aabe aalu Bukhara (plum water), and maushaer (barely water).
• Exercise: swimming in cold water, brisk walking, and aerobic exercise.
• Medicine: According to Unani physicians, the drugs that correct the altered temperament of kidney and liver or restore the retentive power of the kidney are used to manage “Ziabetus haar”. Like Gule nilofar, gule banafsha, gule surkh, gule nasreen, gule gadhal, etc. Qurs tabasheer, qurs kafur, qurs gulnar should be given with maul qara or maul khayar. Hot temperament majun majun falasfa, jawarish zaruni should be advised in Ziabetus barid.
• If humour balgham is excessive, munzij balgham and mushil balgham should be given.
• Avoid: Diuretic herb, strong purgative, sweet substances, red meat, alcohol, etc.
• Nushke: According to different clinical presentation thousands of nushke are available in the Unani text, two short and effective nushka are:
• (1) gudmar buti (Gymnema sylvestre) and jamun (Syzygium cumini) or Gilo khushk (Tinospora cardifolia) both in equal quantity, powdered 3gm twice a day.
• (2) Decoction of Maghze banola (Gossipium hirsutum), 10 gm daily morning.

Unani diabetes control

Unani concept of health restoration and disease prevention asbab-e-sitta zaruriyya (six essential factors) plays an important role in diabetes prevention and establishing a coordinated biological regularity.

Conclusion:

USM focuses on balancing the quantity and quality of humours and by improving temperament of individual in any disease. All the anti-diabetic treatment described in USM is natural and easily available. Unlike allopathic medicine, it is cheaper and free from numerous side effects. These drugs are usually rich in antioxidants (beta-carotene, vitamin A,C,E, flavonoids, selenium, etc). When taken in prescribed amount, it lower cell damage and cut down blood sugar level as well as boost health. Different complication of diabetes can be prevented by early diagnosis of diabetes, proper use of Unani medicine and by adopting six essential factors of USM.
