Madhumegam (Diabetes Mellitus) in Siddha system

  1. Introduction:

In Siddha system of medicine, diseases are classified into 4448 types. According to sage Yugi Vaithiya Chinthaamani, Meganoi is classified into 20 types. Madhumegam is one among them, which comes under Pitha type called Thithippu Neer and it could be correlated with Diabetes Mellitus in modern system.

1.1. Definition:

Diabetes and Unani Medicine

In Unani medicine, the discussion on diabetes is based mainly on the signs and symptoms. Increase in thirst and micturition have been described unanimously by every Unani scholar as cardinal symptoms of diabetes and they had described diabetes by various terms like Dulaab, Istisqa-e-Amnas, Mo’attisha, Dawwarah, Barkariyyah, Zalaqul kulliya, ziyasqoos and Qaramees.
